In
1979, deep within the jungles of El
Peten, a Maya farmer hunting for
meat, shot and wounded a wild boar.
In tracking the wounded beast, the
farmer, Emilio Pop, followed his
prey into the mouth of an enormous
cave, and discovered what has been
called “the greatest Maya
archaeological find of the last half
century.
On the walls of the cave were
eventually found an incredible
number of hieroglyphic messages and
scenes of self metallization, sacred
ball games, and other secret rites
that were carried out well over a
thousand years ago. The elation over
the incredible find was to be short
lived however: in less than two
decades vandals and looters,
as-well-as thoughtless tourists, (“I
wonder if this stuff rubs off?”),
were to destroy many of these
priceless paintings.
The 66, high resolution, images
contained on the Naj Tunich CD were
recorded a very short time after the
paintings were
discovered, fortunately before
depredations began. FILMTEAM, in
fact, brought news of the discovery
to light, and was given credit for
this in the August 31, 1980 edition
of “Prensa Libre”, the national
newspaper of Guatemala.
