Shield Pacal
This stela was commissioned while Pacal was still alive. Pacal (A.D.
615-683) is considered to have been one of the great rulers of the Maya.
He eventually married his own mother and produced a son. Chan Balam, who
followed his father and also became a great ruler in his own right.
Pacal's remains were
entombed in the magnificently carved sarcophagus beneath the Temple of the
Sun at Palenque, in Chiapas Mexico.
