In this depiction - commissioned after his death by his son - the great Lord is shown passing over a symbol of authority to his son, Chan Balam. Pacal is standing on, or rather being supported by, a minor deity. The original stela is in the interior of the Temple of the Foliated Cross at Palenque, Mexico.
